Frequently Asked Questions about Counseling Memphis, TN
What happens during the first full therapy appointment?
I will find out more about you and your journey for recovery - we will probably not talk about any details of traumatic events during this first visit. You will be able to talk about what happened to you when you are ready, but, probably not in the first session. We might need to talk about the here and now and more immediate concerns too - you tell me. In general though, I will be asking more informational questions to learn more about you and what your life experiences in general have been. I also want to hear about your previous experiences, if any, with therapy and or mental health in general.
How often do we meet?
Weekly for starting out. Some people do bi-weekly when they are getting ready to complete or graduate from therapy. Yes - ask me about graduating from therapy - that’s the goal.
What can I expect to happen during our time together?
Words like laid back and casual are good descriptors for sessions with me. I don’t use jargon or clinical slang and try to find humor as we usually talk about some deep and serious and sensitive topics. Yeah, I cuss too. Online sessions will have my little dog in the room and asleep on the couch in full view. People say that talking to me is like talking to a close friend. Plus the cussing.
How long does therapy with me take?
We will make a plan together but usually once someone is ready, the tough trauma focused sessions last for 3 months and we evaluate your progress at that time. Some people graduate in 4 months and some people want therapy to last longer. It all depends on what your journey looks like, ya know? If you have already done trauma therapy and need an informed person for current anxiety/stress I am good with that too.
What is your availability?
Depends on day, time and location of your session. I see people face to face one day a week and often have a waiting list. Other options are online with more availability I am glad to work with preferences in scheduling if I have the openings. In person appointments are in Midtown Memphis in the First Congregational Church at 1000 South Cooper Ave.
Do you take insurance?
I am considered Out of Network with most insurance companies other than Workers Compensation claims.
What is your rate?
I charge everyone the same rate as I charge Workers Compensation which is subject to change.
Trauma Assessment - $220
Individual therapy - $180
Group therapy - $95
